HBO originally announced in February 2024 that the popular crime drama anthology series would get a fifth installment. In a recent interview, Francesca Orsi, the head of drama series and film at HBO, divulged more details about the upcoming season, including a release date window and the story.
Here are the latest updates on True Detective Season 5’s release date.
True Detective Season 5 to get a 2027 release date
Orsi spoke about True Detective Season 5 during an interview with Deadline at The White Lotus Season 3 premiere. She revealed that the fifth’s release date could fall sometime in 2027 and teased that the next season would take place in New York. “It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” Orsi stated. “Issa (López) has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
As things stand now, production will start in the next few months. Casting is also at an early stage. In the same interview, Orsi disclosed that they had built a small writer’s room around López. “I’m really excited about it,” she explained. “We have a small writer’s room going with Issa; she’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
In a December 2024 interview with the New York Post, López stated that the upcoming season will have connections with the events in Ennis, Alaska, the setting of the fourth season, but with “a new story, new characters, and everything.”
True Detective premiered on HBO on January 12, 2014, and garnered widespread popularity and critical acclaim. Seasons 2 to 4 were released on June 21, 2015, January 13, 2019, and January 14, 2024, respectively.
