Thunderbolts*’s Avengers Tower Change to Watchtower Explained

Curious about what’s happening with Avengers Tower in Thunderbolts*? The latest trailer teases a major transformation, sparking speculation about its new purpose and connections to Sentry. Fans have been wondering who controls the building now and how it ties into the MCU’s evolving storyline.

So, let’s break down what’s changing, who’s behind it, and what it could mean for the future of the MCU.

Is the Avengers Tower becoming Sentry’s Watchtower in Thunderbolts*?

The latest Thunderbolts* trailer confirms that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s organization, OXE, is transforming the former Avengers Tower into Sentry’s Watchtower.

The new structure features a darker, more ominous addition at the rear, mirroring the Watchtower’s aesthetic from the comics. Traditionally, Sentry’s headquarters includes an AI system called CLOC, which monitors global events.

In the comics, Sentry’s Watchtower originally stood in midtown Manhattan but faded from memory due to his reality-altering abilities. Tony Stark later built Stark Tower on the same site, unknowingly placing it atop the hidden Watchtower.

After Sentry’s return, the Watchtower re-emerged before ultimately being destroyed in battle. In the MCU, OXE has seized control of Avengers Tower and is reconstructing it into the Watchtower, replacing its blue-tinted windows with gold to match Sentry’s signature colors.

The transformation of the Avengers Tower suggests a major role for Sentry in Thunderbolts*, with the possibility of the Watchtower serving as his base of operations. Promotional footage and set blueprints hint at a connection to the Void, the dark entity linked to Sentry.

The trailer also shows a shadowy force consuming parts of New York, potentially representing the Void’s influence. This raises speculation that the Watchtower could be a containment or operational hub for Sentry under Val’s control.

Additionally, the Avengers Tower’s new look might have broader implications in the MCU. Another upcoming film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, features a version of the Baxter Building that strongly resembles the Avengers Tower, suggesting multiversal connections.

The Fantastic Four’s presence in another reality, combined with rumors of Doctor Doom’s involvement, indicates a possible link between these developments and the larger MCU storyline, including Avengers: Doomsday.
