Dani Busboom Kelly has been named the new head coach of Nebraska volleyball, stepping in after John Cook announced his retirement following 25 years at the helm. The former Husker returns to lead the program she once played for, bringing years of coaching experience and success.

Nebraska has named Dani Busboom Kelly as its new head volleyball coach, replacing John Cook after his 25-year tenure.
Nebraska Director of Athletics Troy Dannen announced her appointment, making her the fourth head coach in the program’s history. Busboom Kelly has signed a six-year contract and will be formally introduced on February 6 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center (via Sports Illustrated).
Busboom Kelly spent the last eight seasons as Louisville’s head coach, compiling a 203-44 (.822) record. Under her leadership, the Cardinals reached two NCAA Championship matches, three NCAA Semifinals, and five regional finals. They also won four ACC titles. Before becoming a head coach, she was on Nebraska’s staff from 2012 to 2016 and contributed to the team’s 2015 NCAA Championship.
A Cortland, Nebraska, native, Busboom Kelly played for Nebraska from 2003 to 2006. She transitioned from setter to libero in her senior season and ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in both digs (1,281) and assists (2,873). She helped Nebraska win a national championship in 2006, along with three Big 12 titles and two NCAA Final appearances.
After graduating, she gained coaching experience at Tennessee and Louisville before returning to Nebraska as an assistant under Cook. She worked with setters, liberos, outside hitters, and recruiting. During her time as an assistant, she helped Nebraska win the 2015 NCAA Championship.
Busboom Kelly is married to former Nebraska football player Lane Kelly. They have a son, Boone. She returns to Nebraska with experience as both a player and coach. She takes over a program that has been one of the most successful in college volleyball.
