Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has finally debuted on Disney Plus, offering Marvel fans a fresh look at their favorite wallcrawler. However, many are wondering about the brand-new series’ timeline placement. They are also curious about whether the series takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or not.
So, does Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man take place in the MCU and what is its timeline placement? Here are your questions answered.
Does Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man take place in the MCU?
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man does not take place in the MCU timeline. It takes place in an alternate universe adjacent to the MCU, within the multiverse.
Series showrunner Jeff Trammell explained in a ComicBook interview, that the creative team decided to set the series in an alternate universe, “early on” during the creative process. “I would say within the first two months of just coming up with the story, we were like, ‘Well, we’re very limited here,” he added. “Let’s move it over, out of the ‘Sacred Timeline,’ gives us a bit more freedom.”
The MCU takes place on Earth-616. However, the earth or universe number for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is currently unknown and yet to be revealed.
In this alternate universe, where this series takes place, Norman Osborn becomes Spider-Man’s mentor and guide to his superheroics, instead of Tony Stark / Iron Man, who has assumed that role in the mainline MCU.
Moreover, Peter Parker’s classmates do not seem to include Ned Leeds or MJ as is the case in the MCU, but characters like Nico Minoru, who in the comics is one of the Runaways, Norman’s son Harry Osborn, and a young Lonnie Lincoln, who in most Marvel media is the villain Tombstone.
However, a behind-the-scenes video for the series reveals that the MCU’s Civil War or a variation of it took place in the universe. Moreover, several mainstay MCU characters like Doctor Strange and Daredevil are confirmed to appear in the series. Daredevil will be voiced by Charlie Cox, who also plays the character in the MCU.
Furthermore, Spider-Man in this alternate universe appears to be a content creator/streamer who uploads videos on the internet. He could be seen livestreaming after capturing criminals in the show.
