James Denton’s Mike Delfino left Desperate Housewives as his character was written off, and eventually killed in the series.
In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Denton shared how he assumed his character was safe from getting killed as it was the final season of the series. However, the show’s creator Marc Cherry decided to end the character and reveal the news to the actor in the middle of Season 7. While talking about how their conversation went, Denton stated:
“Marc [Cherry] asked, ‘Could I talk to you for a minute?’ I had no idea what it was about…That was the first time Marc has ever given me the ‘we need to talk’ line and I didn’t think it was me getting killed because it was so close to the end of the series. Then, he called and he said, ‘We have this idea,’ and he told me.”
Thus, in Season 8, Mike is shown getting killed by loan shark Donny. Donny ends up shooting Mike. His wife Susan Mayer rushes to help him but it is too late, as Mike had passed away. While fans were distraught about Mike’s character being written off, Denton took the news of his character dying well, considering that it had a good run throughout the show.
The actor shared, “It’s fantastic for me. We’re almost through, anyway…When he first told me, I was really surprised. Any other year, I would have been disappointed, but at this point I figured, well, we made it.”
