FDA Labels Walmart Chicken Broth as ‘Class II’ Risk

The Food and Drug Administration in the United States, AKA the FDA, has provided an update on the recall class under which the chicken broth by Treehouse Foods at Walmart falls. The update comes after the federal agency recalled over 2,000 cases of this chicken broth from Walmart due to packaging issues.

Here is what the FDA revealed in a recent statement about the recall.

FDA provides update on Walmart chicken broth

The FDA has released an update regarding the recall category of the Great Value Chicken Broth which was pulled back from Walmart.

As per the update, the recall of the chicken broth by Treehouse Foods has been placed under the Class II category. As per the FDA’s website, Class II recall is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The update was mentioned in the data provided in the FDA’s latest report regarding the product. The federal agency decided to recall 2,023 cases, which amounted to over 12,000 cartons of the Great Value Chicken Broth on December 11, 2024, after reporting they had packaging issues. This broth was manufactured by Treehouse Foods, a company from British Columbia, Canada.

The information on the product in the report states that the broth arrived at Walmart in a family case with six units per case. Moreover, each carton amounted to 48 ounces and was made of Aseptic paper. Stating the reason behind the recall, the FDA further said, “Potential for packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage.”

Meanwhile, Walmart also commented on the recall in a statement to Today. The retail giant’s representatives said, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted (products) from … select, impacted stores.” Additionally, Walmart divulged that the recall was initiated in 242 stores across the US.
