The “hyperpigmentation” meme is trending on TikTok, and many users want to know why. The origin of the well-known meme can be traced back to several years ago. Since then, numerous videos with the “Hyperpigmentation” meme have been shared on various social media platforms, and they have drawn in millions of views and likes. Recently, it has begun gaining traction on TikTok.
Here is everything TikTok users need to know about the “Hyperpigmentation” meme.
Here’s what the ‘hyperpigmentation’ meme on TikTok means
The “Hyperpigmentation” meme originated from a 2019 video shot by a woman named Sonia Tiebi. It features a conversation between Tiebi and her daughter about a rather crude sketch that the latter has drawn of the former. “I sat here and posed for like 10 minutes. Let me see the product,” Tiebi tells her daughter in the video. The girl appears to be apprehensive but shows Tiebi the drawing.
After a pause, Tiebi asks if the person in the drawing is supposed to be her. When the girl drops the drawing, Tiebi rushes to assure her while trying to suppress her laughter, “No, no, it’s nice. It’s so nice. I’ve never looked better. Oh, where were you when it was time for senior photos?”
When the girl says that she doesn’t think it looks good, Tiebi exclaims that it is fantastic. She subsequently adds the now-famous quote, “What’s that? Is that hyperpigmentation?”
It is unknown where Tiebi first initially shared the video, but the popular YouTube channel ViralHog acquired the rights to it at some point. The caption in the ViralHog’s post claims that the incident took place on May 4, 2019, in Omaha, Nebraska.
The video has been available on the ViralHog channel since June of that year. A month later, Tiebi reportedly shared it on her X (formerly Twitter) account. As mentioned above, it has recently amassed considerable popularity on TikTok with many users sharing the meme as part of their posts.
