Why Did Francis Ellis Get Fired From Barstool?

Renowned sports media outlet Barstool is currently experiencing upheaval in its personnel after rumors surfaced regarding the potential exit of Bussin’ With the Boys‘ hosts. Consequently, fans have turned their attention to former Barstool writer Francis Ellis, who was unceremoniously fired in 2019. But what was the exact reason behind this controversial decision?

Here’s everything you need to know about Ellis’ ousting from the blog website and digital media company.

Why was Francis fired from Barstool?

In June 2019, the writer-turned-comedian published a blog about the then-disappearance of Utah college student Mackenzie Lueck.

After sharing details of the case, Ellis made disparaging remarks about Lueck, assuming she was “fine.” He referred to her as a “proud sugar baby,” citing reports that she was registered on SeekingArrangement.com, a dating website that connects younger, financially struggling individuals with older, wealthier counterparts. Ellis also mocked Lueck’s social media presence, describing her Instagram following as “pretty weak.”

Tragically, just hours after the blog went live, Lueck’s body was discovered. This led Barstool Sports founder David Portnoy to fire Ellis. In a now-deleted video, Portnoy explained, “He put it up and deleted it before I even knew it existed, but the damage is done. You just can’t do it. Francis is a talented guy, and he’ll be fine. I wish we didn’t have to fire him, but we do,” according to Fox News.

Despite the termination, Francis Ellis acknowledged his mistake in a public apology. He admitted, “Tragically, a few hours later, it was discovered that Mackenzie had been killed. It was only then that I realized just how horrible my judgment had been.” He also took full accountability for his actions, stating, “Barstool Sports gave me complete liberty to post my work without oversight, and I abused that trust with my piece. For that, David Portnoy fired me today, and I feel that was entirely justified.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Ellis is now a freelance writer and serves as the founder and president of Ellis Prep LLC.
