Fans are wondering if the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. With how locked down console generations have become in recent years, it’s an understandable concern. Thankfully, Nintendo has already confirmed whether old Switch games will work on the new Switch 2.
Is Switch 2 backwards compatible and can play old games?
Yes, the Nintendo Switch 2 is backwards compatible and can play old games.
During the console’s “first-look trailer,” it was confirmed that the Switch 2 “plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games as well as Nintendo Switch games.”
Additionally, it was confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 “plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.”
However, the reveal video also stated that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”
While the vast majority of original Switch games are expected to run just fine on the Switch 2, some titles may experience some issues. For those games, Nintendo will be providing more information on its website “at a later date.”
The Nintendo Switch 2’s backwards compatibility support means users will be able to play older Switch games. Those who have built up a catalog of original Switch games will no doubt be relieved to hear that they’ll be able to enjoy those titles on the next-generation.
With the Switch 2 supporting older games, questions will be asked about whether the new, more powerful hardware will offer enhanced frame rates and other features. For now, nothing is confirmed, but seeing performance boosts in FPS-challenged titles would be great. Hopefully Nintendo confirm more information soon.
Expect to learn more about the Nintendo Switch 2 and its backwards compatibility during the dedicated Direct that will be streamed on April 2.
