However, the two protagonists could possibly die in the third installment. This is thanks to James Cameron’s recent interview with Empire Magazine. Here, the 70-year-old director revealed that the third film would have many more twists and turns compared to prior entries. He also said that they were making some “brave choices.”
It is unclear what Cameron meant by “brave choices.” However, it can be considered applicable to potentially killing off beloved characters Jake and Neytiri.
Moreover, in another interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Cameron explained the symbolism and meaning of Avatar 3’s subtitle, Fire and Ash. Here, he explained that Fire represented “violence, hatred, and trauma” and Ash represented “grief.” Considering the negative connotations of those words, it lends credence to the possibility that Jake and Neytiri die in the film, perhaps in battle or dishonorable ways.
Furthermore, Jake and Neytiri dying would not be too surprising. This is because the franchise has killed off major characters before. The first film killed off Sigourney Weaver‘s Grace Augustine and Stephen Lang‘s Miles Quarritch, though the latter was resurrected as a N’avi in the second film.
