What Is the Severance Procedure & Why Did Mark Agree for It?

As the highly anticipated Severance Season 2 inches closer to its release date, fans have started wondering about the eponymous procedure and what it is. Moreover, viewers also wish to learn why Adam Scott’s Mark Scout agreed to get severance done and underwent the procedure.

Here are all your questions answered.

What is the Severance procedure in the Apple TV+ series?

The Severance in the Apple TV+ series is a medical procedure the employees of Lumon Industries undergo. This procedure sees employees have their work and personal life memories split via surgery, which implants a chip into their brains. This chip is typically activated when employees enter the restricted or “severed” sections of their company. This procedure is to ensure that highly classified information pertaining to Lumon is not leaked to the public.

The employees who undergo the severance procedure have their consciousness split into two distinct beings, “Outies” and “Innies.” When Lumon Industries employees are at work, they are Innies and they cannot remember anything from their personal lives. However, when employees exit their work, they become Outies and are unable to recall anything from their office lives. Moreover, the employees end up having contrasting personalities, due to two separate consciousnesses.

The split between an individual’s consciousness into their Innie and Outie personas is strictly enforced.

Why did Mark S agree for the Severance procedure?

Mark Scout agreed to get the Severance procedure as he wished to find relief following his wife’s alleged demise in a car accident, which he had been struggling to come to terms with.

As an Outie, Scout became an alcoholic to dull the pain of losing his wife.

Severance was helmed by Dan Erickson, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Ben Stiller and Adam Scott. Besides Scott, the cast includes Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette.
