Several outlets reported that Brian Matusz passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. He was 37 years old. At the time of this article’s composition, the cause of his death remains unknown.

The Baltimore Orioles, the team where Matusz spent most of his professional career, released a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz,” the post reads. “A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face.

The statement concluded with the following: “Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”

Originally from Grand Junction, Colorado, Matusz studied at St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, Arizona, before being picked at the 2005 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Angels. However, he decided against playing baseball professionally at the time and became a student-athlete at the University of San Diego. In the 2008 MLB draft, the Orioles chose Matusz as their fourth overall pick. He played his first match for the team a year later.

Matusz made his last MLB appearance in 2016. He later played in the minor league for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Mexican League for the Acereros de Monclova, and the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball for the Long Island Ducks.

Matusz belonged to a family where several other members also enjoyed athletic pursuits. His father, Michael, was a track-and-field athlete representing Purdue University, whereas his brother, Chris, played baseball in college.
