Who Is Gunner Stockton, Georgia QB Replacing Carson Beck?

Curious about Georgia’s new quarterback stepping up? Gunner Stockton will replace Carson Beck, who is sidelined after UCL surgery. With the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes on the line, Stockton will lead the offense in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame.

Here’s a quick breakdown of Stockton’s journey, his college career so far, and what his first start means for Georgia’s title run.

Who is Gunner Stockton?

Gunner Stockton is a redshirt sophomore quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 215 pounds.

He joined the program in 2022 as a four-star recruit, highly rated by ESPN and 247 Sports. Stockton has primarily served as Carson Beck’s backup but is now expected to start in Georgia’s upcoming Sugar Bowl game.

Stockton grew up in Tiger, Georgia, and attended Rabun County High School. During his high school career, he gained attention for his strong passing ability and athleticism, setting multiple state records, including career touchdown passes. He later committed to Georgia, where he chose to redshirt his first year to develop within the program.

Since his redshirt season in 2022, Stockton has seen limited playing time. In 2023, he completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 148 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. His 2024 season saw slightly more action, with Stockton completing 25 of 32 passes for 206 yards and one interception (via NBC). His most notable appearance came during the SEC Championship Game against Texas, where he stepped in after Beck’s injury and completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards.

Carson Beck underwent UCL surgery, ruling him out of the College Football Playoff. This puts Gunner Stockton in line to start Georgia’s quarterfinal matchup against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia, now chasing an Orange Bowl spot against Penn State, faces high stakes in a game delayed by a deadly attack in New Orleans.

Georgia’s head coach, Kirby Smart, noted Stockton’s work ethic and readiness for the starting role, emphasizing his preparation over time. Stockton’s upcoming performance in the Sugar Bowl will be critical as Georgia seeks to continue its playoff run.
