Does Donald Trump Want to Ban TikTok or Save It?

The debate over whether Donald Trump wants to ban or save TikTok has gained attention as the app’s future in the United States is uncertain. With a legal case in progress, Trump’s involvement has raised questions. Some believe that he might find a way to save TikTok.

Here is what’s currently known about Trump’s stance on a TikTok ban.

Donald Trump believes he can ‘save’ TikTok from ban

Donald Trump has taken a stand on the controversial TikTok ban, filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court. In the brief, Trump argues that, due to his upcoming return to the White House, he should be the one to determine TikTok’s future in the United States. The case is set to be heard in January 2025. It centers on a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban over national security concerns.

The legislation mandates that TikTok must be sold by January 19, 2025. If this deadline is not met, the app will be removed from Google and Apple’s app stores. Trump has argued that this deadline undermines his ability to manage the situation after he assumes office the following day. He claims he has the expertise and mandate to protect national security while allowing the 170 million Americans who use TikTok to maintain their access to the platform. Trump has previously publicly expressed his support for the app. He met with TikTok’s CEO and emphasized his intention to find a solution that doesn’t stifle free speech.

In the brief, Trump calls for an extension of the divestment deadline, so he can personally negotiate a solution that addresses both the national security concerns and the First Amendment issues raised by the law. The brief states, ”As the incoming Chief Executive, President Trump has a particularly powerful interest in and responsibility for those national-security and foreign-policy questions, and he is the right constitutional actor to resolve the dispute through political means.”

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on January 10, 2025, and Trump’s involvement in the case could have significant implications for the future of TikTok in the U.S.
