Fans are eager to know if Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) and Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) appear in Squid Game Season 2. Introduced in Season 1, both characters participated in the deadly games and quickly became fan favorites. However, the series ended tragically for them, nullifying their chances of return. Since then, fans have been curious if the showrunners found a creative way to resurrect them this season. Here are the details.
Are Park Hae-soo’s Cho Sang-woo and Jung Ho-yeon’s Sae-byeok in Squid Game Season 2?
Cho Sang-woo and Sae-byeok do not return in Squid Game Season 2, as they died in the events of the first season. However, they briefly appear in Gi-hun’s nightmare scene.
Season 2, Episode 1, titled “Bread and Lottery”, features the main character, Gi-hun. He returns to the survival games seeking revenge on the Front Man and aiming to end the brutal competition. The episode highlights the horrors of the game by briefly revisiting two fan-favorite characters, Cho Sang-woo and Sae-byeok, who were finalists in the previous season.
In a chilling scene, Gi-hun wakes from a nightmare. The Front Man holds the severed heads of Cho Sang-woo and Kang Sae-byeok. This haunting moment horrifies and upsets Gi-hun. It reflects the psychological torment caused by the games and how they pitted individuals against each other. Despite their brief appearance in the nightmare, Cho Sang-woo and Sae-byeok have no role in Season 2. Their characters remain deceased.
In Season 1, the story ends poorly for both characters, with only Gi-hun surviving the games and being crowned the winner. Sae-byeok, already gravely injured during the glass bridge game, is betrayed by Sang-woo, who stabs her in the neck, ensuring her demise. He does this intentionally to prevent Gi-hun from abandoning the games to save her.
Later, the final showdown sees Sang-woo and Gi-hun face off as defender and attacker, respectively. Ultimately, Sang-woo chooses to take his own life, making Gi-hun the victor of the games.
