The connection between Kraven the Hunter and Spider-Man has always intrigued fans. Since the web-slinger played a pivotal role in Kraven’s story, which debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man issue #15 (1964), many are curious if Spider-Man will appear in Sony’s Kraven the Hunter. So, is Spider-Man in Sony’s universe Kraven the Hunter?
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie and its ties to the Sony Spider-Man Universe.
Does any Spider-Man appear in Sony’s Kraven the Hunter movie?
No, Spider-Man doesn’t appear in Sony’s Kraven the Hunter. However, easter eggs related to the webhead can be expected.
Spider-Man does not appear in Kraven the Hunter as Kraven is given a new origin story in the movie that sets it apart from its source material. The SSU has established Kraven not as a web-slinger’s rival but rather as an anti-hero, who later becomes the most-feared hunter. His complex relationship with his father results in a perilous encounter with a lion, modifying his DNA and gracing him with superhuman powers.
Although the origins are modified, director J.C. Chandor revealed that they have tried to do justice to Kraven’s origin in the comics too. “The audience obviously takes the foundational elements of the canon here really seriously – and so did we,” he added. (via ComicBook)
However, this doesn’t mean that the director has no plans for a web-slinger and Kraven crossover. In an interview with ComicBook, Johnson and Chandor acknowledge that through the movie they use a more original storyline, where his origins are recalled via flashbacks. The current story will play a major role in building his “Last Hunt” era. Here, “Last Hunt” alludes to the Amazing Spider-Man comics storyline.
However, fleshing out more of Kraven’s villain arc will only be possible if fans show support for the latest installment and a sequel gets greenlit.
“So the character that that we created, if everyone comes out and supports the film and we get to keep telling this story, that is where we were heading towards. And the depth and darkness and challenge that comes along with that storytelling … I think if you know that canon, and you give us a chance, you’ll see that we’re trying to build off the spirit of that original document,” Chandor explained.
