Andrew Garfield & Ryan Reynolds Reflect on Their ‘Insensitive’ Golden Globes Kiss

Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds recently appeared together for Variety’s Actors on Actors 2024, wherein they addressed their iconic kiss during the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, where Ryan Gosling won Best Performance for his role in La La Land. Accordingly, fans are wondering what the Spider-Man and Deadpool actors said about the kiss.

Here is everything you need to know.

What did Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds say about the kiss?

Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds, while conversing in their Actors on Actors segment, discussed their popular 2017 Golden Globes Awards kiss and how the former suggested it as a prank to the latter. Reynolds reminded Garfield that the awards ceremony was the last time they had met. The two expressed regret for the kiss stealing the spotlight from Ryan Gosling, who had won Best Performance by an Actor for his role in La La Land. Reynolds was nominated for 2016’s Deadpool.

“And of course, Gosling absolutely did not deserve it,” Reynolds jokingly said. “I’m a genuinely nutty fan of his.”

To this, Garfield responded that he was “glad” Reynolds “was game” to do the kiss. The We Live in Time star then stated he felt “a bit insensitive” towards Gosling’s win and that he eventually apologized to him.

Reynolds then quipped, “I actually egged his house, which is super childish to do but I didn’t feel so great about losing.”

The two actors then expressed relief that the kiss had been captured at a wide angle. “Nobody actually noticed until later, and it was actually kind of perfect,” Reynolds added.

Besides the kiss, the two actors discussed their respective filmographies and crafts. They also expressed admiration for each other. “We love you in our house and your work and your dedication,” Reynolds told Garfield. “You do something that only you can do, and that’s a beautiful thing to watch in action.”

Meanwhile, Garfield praised the “meta-ness” of Deadpool & Wolverine and expressed surprise at how Reynolds wrote the film.
