Why Was LeBron James Out of Lakers vs. Trail Blazers Game? Injury Update

LeBron James was notably absent from the Los Angeles Lakers lineup for their game against the Portland Trail Blazers due to an injury. As an essential player for the Lakers, his absence naturally sparked questions about the severity of the injury. Though the team initially provided limited details, it has raised concern amongst fans.

Here’s an update on LeBron James’ injury.

What happened to LeBron James?

LeBron James was absent from the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night due to a left foot injury. James first felt a left foot injury during the Lakers’ defeat to the Miami Heat on Wednesday. It forced him to miss his first game of the season. Despite the discomfort, James had played a season-high 43 minutes just two nights earlier in an overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks, where he contributed 39 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Heading into Sunday’s game, James was initially listed as doubtful. He was then upgraded to probable before being downgraded again to doubtful following a team walk-through. Lakers coach JJ Redick said, “With LeBron out, we’re going to have to move, we’re going to have to cut, we’re going to have to pass. We’re going to have to play in transition. And I think overall for our team, just getting back to really emphasize trying to get a paint touch on every possession. We were doing that earlier in the year and have gotten away from that and need to get back to that.” (via ESPN)

While James’ absence is a setback, the Lakers are fortunate to have a four-day break before their next game. Their next outing will be against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. This extended time off could allow the 22-year veteran to recover and return to the court fully rested. Lakers guard Austin Reaves was also out on Sunday, missing his fifth consecutive game due to a left pelvic contusion.
