Selena Gomez recently responded to Eugenio Derbez‘s criticism of her role as Jessi del Monte in Emilia Perez. This has intrigued many fans who wish to learn what Gomez said. Did Gomez defend her portrayal? Did she call out Derbez for his comments?
Here are all the details.
Selena Gomez responds to Eugenio Derbez’s criticism
In an appearance on the Hablando de Cine podcast (via TikTok), Derbez criticized Gomez’s performance in the film and called it “indefensible.” He added that while watching the film, whenever he saw Gomez appear on-screen and speak Spanish, which is not the actress and singer’s native language, he and the other attendees looked at each other in shock and said, “Wow, what is this?”
Gomez eventually responded in the comments section, saying she understood where Eugenio Derbez’s criticism was coming from. “I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given,” she added. “Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.”
Derbez eventually apologized for his harsh criticism on TikTok via a letter addressed to Gomez. Here, he said his “careless comments” in the podcast were “indefensible” and went against his values and beliefs. He admitted he was wrong and had no excuse for his comments. Derbez also added how Latinos should support one another and praised Gomez.
He then concluded by saying Emilia Perez needed to be celebrated as a film and should not be tarnished by his thoughtless remarks. The CODA actor further added that he understood if Gomez could not accept his apology but stressed its sincerity.
