Craig Conover’s transformation has captivated Southern Charm fans. His decision to reduce drinking stems from his relationship with Paige DeSorbo and his desire for personal growth. The changes have sparked discussions about commitment and self-improvement.
Here’s a look at Conover’s motivations, challenges, and how his lifestyle changes shape his future.
Craig Conover talks about why he pulled back from drinking
Craig Conover, a star on Southern Charm, recently revealed why he scaled back his alcohol consumption, citing his desire to build a future with his girlfriend, Paige DeSorbo.
Speaking with PEOPLE, Conover explained, “Probably once every two months I’ll have a drink or two, but that is drastically better than drinking every night or every other night. I’m having fun finding that middle ground.” His decision stemmed from a desire to be “husband and father material” rather than “just the fun boyfriend.”
Inspired by his father’s choice to stop drinking after Conover was born, he reflected on his lifestyle. “I talked to my dad…and he’s like, ‘You’re not blacking out, but nothing good’s happening either. You’re living a very stagnant life,’” Conover shared. To aid his shift, he used the Reframe app and redirected his energy toward hobbies like gardening, spending time with family, and focusing on his business, Sewing Down South. He noted, “Every activity to me was a drinking activity, and I never knew the world outside of it.”
Conover also discussed the challenges of making lifestyle changes in a social environment like Southern Charm. He acknowledged tension with castmates who may not fully understand his decision. Emphasizing personal growth, he stated, “There’s a lot of…work you have to put in. It doesn’t happen overnight.” Conover also spoke about Shep Rose’s similar struggles, noting, “In my opinion, Shep wasn’t ready to do what it takes to actually make a change.”
Conover and DeSorbo have faced public scrutiny over their relationship but remain focused on building a strong foundation. “We’re playing the long game,” Conover said, adding, “But the foundation that we’re building is so that we die together one day, not just make it fun”
With a renewed focus on growth and his relationship, Conover is embracing a more balanced life while preparing for a future with DeSorbo. Season 10 of Southern Charm premiered on December 5, 2024.
