When & Why Is Ubisoft Shutting Down XDefiant?

Many individuals are curious about why Ubisoft shut down its recently launched game, XDefiant. The publisher announced the free-to-play first-person shooter game back in 2021. After developing it for a year and gaining traction in its beta versions via Twitch, it officially launched this year, earning massive attention in a short time. Despite the game’s initial success, the publisher eventually decided to close the game recently.

When will Ubisoft shut down XDefiant?

Ubisoft confirmed that Xdefiant’s servers will remain operational until June 2, 2025.

However, users will no longer be able to download, register, and make purchases in the shooter game, effective immediately. The publisher will also allow users to gain access to the third season content sometime in the “near future.” (via Polygon)

For now, the game will not be available for new users. Ubisoft has assured everyone who made the $69.99 Ultimate Founder’s Pack or other in-app purchases recently that their amounts will be refunded to their respective accounts. Additionally, any purchases made in the last 30 days will be credited to players as well. Per XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin’s letter, they can expect a refund within 8 weeks.

Why is XDefiant being taken down by Ubisoft?

Ubisoft decided to shut down XDefiant because of its inability to attract players required for their long-term aim.

Ubisoft recently released a lengthy statement explaining the discontinuation of its popular first-person shooter game. It cited that despite everyone’s hard work and the game’s initial success, it couldn’t drive the audience they were expecting to stick in the “demanding FPS market.”

Given that the titular game is far from meeting their expectations in terms of attracting players, they have decided to stop funding it, leading to its shutdown. The statement reads, “As a result, the game is too far away from reaching the results required to enable further significant investment, and we are announcing that we will be sunsetting it.”
