Kevin Durant‘s performance against the San Antonio Spurs took an unexpected turn. The star forward exited the game due to an injury. While the Phoenix Suns celebrated their win, concerns quickly shifted to Durant’s status and what it could mean for the team moving forward. So, what happened?
Let’s take a closer look at Kevin Durant’s injury.
How did Kevin Durant get injured?
Kevin Durant’s game against the San Antonio Spurs was cut short on Tuesday due to a sprained left ankle. The injury occurred late in the second quarter as the Phoenix Suns forward attempted to navigate past Julian Champagnie and Devin Vassell in transition. While moving toward the basket, Durant stepped on Champagnie’s foot. This caused him to lose his balance and crash into the court.
Though visibly in pain, Durant stayed in the game briefly, making his free throws and even sinking a mid-range jumper shortly after. Then, he was replaced by Royce O’Neale with 3:51 left in the quarter. At halftime, Durant’s ankle reportedly stiffened, prompting the medical staff to keep him sidelined for the rest of the game. He made a short return at the beginning of the third quarter. However, Durant soon exited and headed to the locker room.
When will Kevin Durant return to play for NBA?
There is no specific timeline for Kevin Durant returning to play for the NBA after his knee injury. After the game, Coach Mike Budenholzer addressed the situation, confirming that Durant’s condition would be reassessed the following day.
Budenholzer explained. “I think he stepped on somebody’s foot in transition, and I think at halftime it stiffened up. We will have to evaluate him again in the morning, see how he feels coming out of it, see how he does overnight. I don’t really know a whole lot more than the report at halftime.”
The coach remained optimistic despite Durant’s absence. Budenholzer said, “It’s part of our league. We’re not any different.” (via ESPN)
