Who is the Netflix’s The Empress about?

Netflix’s The Empress is about Empress Elisabeth ‘Sisi’ Von Wittelsbach, the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph of the Austrian Empire.

Empress Elisabeth was born into the royal Bavarian House of Wittlesbach on December 24, 1837. She was known for her rebellious and “free-minded” attitude and often explored the countryside and partook in creative activities, as encouraged by her parents. Elisabeth was later crowned the Queen of Hungary on June 8, 1967.

The Austrian monarch nurtured popularity amongst the common folk. Reportedly, she was often the topic of gossip due to her habits of smoking, riding, and exercising, and her unusual behavior when it came to court customs. (via Tatler)

Elisabeth was assassinated by Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni. He stabbed her, while she was on a trip to Switzerland, resulting in her death on September 10, 1898.

The Netflix series documents several years of Empress Elisabeth’s life in 19th-century Austria. The first season of the show mainly takes place in 1853. Meanwhile, the recently released sophomore season picks up three years later in 1856 and spans until 1858.

Is The Empress based on a true story and real events?

The Empress is mostly based on a true story but blends real events with fiction.

For instance, Emperor Franz Joseph chose to marry Elisabeth over her sister Helene (whom he was originally expected to marry), as confirmed in history. However, the depiction of their growing relationship varies.

In the series, Elisabeth becomes attracted to Franz prior to their marriage. Albeit, according to historical records, he fell in love with her instantly, but she reportedly initially did not like him, even as she married him.
