Renowned country singer Eric Church is once again dominating headlines following his performance at the 2024 CMA Awards. The ACM Award winner captivated the live audience with his singing while also taking time out to honor the victims of the recent North Carolina floods. As such, fans are eager to know more details about Eric Church, including why he is mostly seen wearing sunglasses. So, what is the reason behind this quirky habit of the veteran musician?
Here’s everything you need as to why Eric Church wears sunglasses even when he is indoors.
Reason why Eric Church wears sunglasses
Eric Church opened up about his peculiar decision to don shades during performances following a 2012 benefit concert dedicated to Levon Helm. In the discussion, the “Springsteen” singer revealed that he wears sunglasses to protect his eyes and contact lenses from the extensive lighting on stage.
As reported by Whiskey Riff, Church explained, “I wear contacts, and my eyes don’t do real well with lubrication. We would play all these bars and clubs and the bar can lights… I’m 6’3” so they’d bake my contacts and they’d fall out. So I ended up being blind on stage. Somebody suggested to put glasses on, and it worked.”
Eric Church then admitted that he did not expect the sunglasses bit to stick with his persona. “What’s funny is that it stuck. It was never thought out. We never thought, ‘This would be good.’ We actually at the time thought, ‘This is not good,’ you know? But it ended up being a thing,” he added.
The black sunglasses have since become synonymous with Eric Church, and the singer seems to have embraced the association with open arms. He notably released a single in 2022 titled “Through My Ray-Bans,” seemingly indulging in a bit of fan service.
