Apple TV Plus’ Silo depicts a disease called Syndrome, which looms over the characters in the show. Accordingly, fans are wondering what the Syndrome disease in Silo is, what are its symptoms, and what causes it.
Here is the Syndrome disease in Silo, and its symptoms, along with its causes explained.
Silo’s Syndrome and symptoms explained
The Syndrome disease in Silo primarily affects the person’s body. Its symptoms are detailed on a signboard located in Silo’s mechanical, which reads, “The Syndrome do you know the signs?”
The symptoms include involuntary twitching, shaking of the extremities, flashes of pain, muscle spasms, and impaired balance and movement. The signboard further states that if the Syndrome is not treated, the disease will spread to the brain and cause reduced cognitive functioning, eventually shutting down the person’s entire nervous system.
Finally, the signboard urges those with the infection to bring it to the attention of personnel at any medical level and avail of free advice and treatment. The signboard also encourages people to be honest about having the illness, reminding them about how “Clean living is the real safeguard.”
Moreover, according to Article 5 in Silo’s Pact, those afflicted with the Syndrome are not allowed to hold a position in the public office or any other office of authority. This is to ensure the safety of Silo’s inhabitants.
Deputy Billings is one of the major characters in the show suffering from Syndrome. As such, when he violates Article 5 by keeping his position and hiding that he has the illness, he invites Juliette’s frustration and anger.
However, the disease appears to not be contagious. This is because Billings does not isolate himself from his family. It is also seemingly not genetic, as Billings’ wife tells him that their child does not have the illness like him.
What causes the Syndrome in Silo?
Silo has not officially explained what causes the Syndrome illness.
However, it can be speculated from the signboard promoting “clean living” that the Syndrome is caused by a non-contagious bacterial infection. This infection is likely due to continued exposure to indoor pollution and rusty metal parts.
Notably, the illness does not appear or get referenced in Hugh Howey’s Silo novels, which the series is based on.
