Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz to reunite in Marc Webb’s Lionsgate thriller, Day Drinker
Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz will star in Lionsgate’s thriller Day Drinker, helmed by Marc Webb. This film marks their fourth collaboration following Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. Lionsgate announced the project on October 28, 2024, with plans to launch international sales at the American Film Market (AFM).
Day Drinker follows the story of a cruise ship bartender who encounters a mysterious day drinker, leading both characters into a criminal underworld with unexpected connections. The screenplay, written by Zach Dean, whose credits include The Tomorrow War and Fast X, is intended to feature action and suspense elements. The production team includes Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner. The movie is executive-produced by 30West.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, described Day Drinker as a film that “combines a highly commercial concept with wildly outrageous twists and turns all set in an incredible world” in a statement. Chelsea Kujawa will oversee the project for Lionsgate, while Dan Freedman negotiated the studio’s deals.
Day Drinker is Johnny Depp’s first major studio project since his legal proceedings with Amber Heard. His last studio role was in Fantastic Beasts. Penélope Cruz, recently seen in Michael Mann’s Ferrari and soon to appear in The Bride, continues adding notable projects to her filmography. Lionsgate and 30West also recently partnered on Power Ballad, starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
