Damstra along with vocalist David James Swanson and drummer Brad Holland formed the band Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1996. They got their big break after being discovered by Jack White, the popular guitarist and frontman of The White Stripes. Whirlwind Heat released several albums and singles during the early 2000s but were disbanded in 2006 (via Whirlwind Heat).
