What Is $300 Million JUUL Class Action Lawsuit & How Are People Getting Paid?

The $300 million class action lawsuit against JUUL has sparked interest among both consumers and e-cigarette users. Initial interest in the controversy surrounding JUUL kicked off with Netflix’s Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul in 2023. Many are now curious about how the lawsuit will affect them, so there have been many questions about the settlement and payment process.

In this article, we will delve into the details of the $300 Million JUUL class action lawsuit.

$300 Million JUUL class action lawsuit explained

In 2021, a significant class-action lawsuit was initiated against JUUL, the well-known e-cigarette brand. The lawsuit accused the company of misleading consumers about the addictive properties of its products and of marketing them illegally to minors. It was claimed that consumers were paying high prices for JUUL products due to the lack of accurate information regarding their safety and addictive nature.

In March 2024, a federal court approved a settlement. In the settlement, Altria, a major tobacco company previously holding a 35 percent share in JUUL, agreed to pay $45 million. This was in addition to a prior settlement in which JUUL consented to pay $255 million. By March, over 14 million claims had been submitted in connection with the lawsuit.

The lawsuit’s central issues included allegations that JUUL’s marketing tactics misrepresented the dangers of its products and targeted underage users. The court did not rule on whether any laws were violated. However, JUUL reached a settlement agreement that totaled $300 million when combined with Altria’s payment.

How are customers getting paid?

The settlement process involving JUUL and Altria has recently kicked off. The checks were sent out late last week, and electronic payments started on Monday. More payments are expected to be processed in the coming days. Customers are being paid varying amounts as part of the JUUL settlement. These range from $15 to upwards of $10,000. An average payout is around $240.
