What Is Agatha Harkness & Rio Vidal’s Relationship? MCU History Explained

Agatha All Along‘s recent premiere has intrigued fans to dive deeper into Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal’s relationship. Their witchy quarrel in the initial episodes made many wonder about their past connection and potential unfinished business. With Aubrey Plaza‘s previous nod to her character’s LGBTQ dynamic with Agatha, many have theorized their romantic connection. So, are Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha and Plaza’s Rio Vidal lovers? Here are the details.

Are Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal lovers in the MCU?

Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal’s romantic relationship remains unconfirmed in the MCU. However, several clues suggest their past love story.

Agatha All Along premiered recently but didn’t touch upon Agatha and Rio’s past connection too much. However, a moment, particularly from the first episode, hinted at their potential romantic history. Amidst their witchy argument, Rio takes Agatha’s hand and licks it, which could be a nod to their past relationship, which might not have ended on a good note.

Additionally, Plaza sat down with Kakuchopurei, explaining the character dynamics between Rio and Agatha. She said, “I think they can expect a very intense dynamic, one that has all the colors of the rainbow.” This fueled speculation about their characters being involved in an LQBTQ+ bond. In another interview with Variety, she also mentioned that the Disney Plus series better be the “gayest Marvel project” as that is what she signed up for. While all these possible hints suggest a strong relationship, fans might have to wait for the upcoming episodes to get a clear idea of their dynamics.

Why Agatha didn’t want Rio Vidal’s Green Witch in her coven?

Their romantic history could be a reason for Agatha not to include Rio Vidal’s Green Witch in her coven.

As Agatha and Rio engage in a fight towards the end of episode 1, the latter makes a shocking revelation. She mentions having a black heart that beats only for Agatha, hinting at their romantic connection. Moreover, when Agatha discovers a chit in Episode 2, she sees the mention of Black Heart in the coven list. This signifies that Plaza’s character was supposed to be the fourth witch of her coven, but she didn’t include her due to their romantic past. Other reasons could be their varying power levels and Agatha’s trust issues with her ex-lover, which made her replace Rio with Sharon Davis.
