What Happened to Karolina Muchova? Health & Injury Update

Despite being severely injury-prone throughout the course of her career, tennis icon Karolina Muchova continues to create new records on the court. The Czech superstar recently achieved another feat after she defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia to qualify for the 2024 US Open semi-final stage. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old athlete still had to face fitness issues en route her quarterfinal victory. But, what happened to Karolina Muchova, and what was her last major injury?

Here are all the available details regarding Muchova’s medical condition.

What injury did Karolina Muchova suffer from before the US Open?

Karolina Muchova suffered a wrist injury last year that ended up sidelining her for several months. In her latest US Open fixture against Haddad Maia, the Czech ace reportedly contracted a stomach bug.

The highly-skilled tennis star has struggled with fitness troubles ever since she turned professional in 2013. Her inconsistent physical health was on full display during her 2023 US Open semi-final loss to Coco Gauff. After her frustrating defeat, Muchova’s representatives confirmed that she will undergo recovery due to issues with her wrist. As a result, the then-World No. 8 had to forcefully withdraw from the season-ending WTA Finals, as per WTA Tennis.

The wrist injury ultimately kept Karolina Muchova out of action for five months before she opted to go for surgery in February 2024. Since then, Muchova has made appearances in several tournaments, with the 2024 US Open being her sixth contest post-recovery. However, the sportswoman still seems to be experiencing discomfort with her condition, as evidenced by her latest outing.

Muchova registered a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia but had to abandon the court temporarily due to a stomach bug. Her Brazilian opponent faced fitness issues of her own after experiencing trouble breathing. Haddad Maia’s uncertain condition even caused three officials to descend to court and ensure her healthy continuation, as per the US Open. Despite the hurdles, the match eventually resumed, with Muchova notching the win at the end.

Muchova is now scheduled to face Jessica Pegula in the second women’s singles semi-final of the 2024 US Open.
