Ever since the DCU’s Green Lantern-based Lanterns series was announced by James Gunn in January 2023, fans have often wondered who could essay the role of Hal Jordan. Amid speculation, multiple names like Channing Tatum and Glen Powell had been thrown into the mix. Now, it seems the latest rumors suggest three other contenders for the role of Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern in the DCU series. So, which actors could play Hal Jordan in Lanterns? Are Josh Brolin and Matthew McConaughey on the list? Here are our possible picks for the role.
Which actors could play Hal Jordan in DC’s Green Lantern series?
Josh Brolin, Matthew McConaughey, and Ewan McGregor could play Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the upcoming Lanterns series, as per reports.
According to a scoop from reputable industry insider Jeff Sneider, the three aforementioned actors have either been reportedly offered the role or are in consideration.
Sneider mentioned that MCU star Josh Brolin was recently offered the role of Hal Jordan in Lanterns, the story and setting of which are modeled after True Detective. He added that if Brolin turned down the role, then DC Studios would be considering OG True Detective star Matthew McConaughey as his replacement. And, Star Wars star Ewan McGregor would be the next pick if McConaughey also passes on the role.
In the past, however, Channing Tatum had been rumored to take on the role. These rumors surfaced when John Rocha, on the Hot Mic Podcast with Jeff Sneider, claimed that his sources close to Warner Bros. indicated that the studio liked Sneider’s idea of casting Tatum as Jordan.
Jon Hamm was another name attached to Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern, although it was for the 2011 Green Lantern film. Ryan Reynolds was eventually cast in the movie and it went on to become a critical and commercial flop. Hamm had turned down the project because he did not want to do it, which he revealed in a June 2024 The Hollywood Reporter interview.
Nevertheless, Hal Jordan for Lanterns has yet to be officially cast. Thus, it remains to be seen whether one of the aforementioned actors or someone else entirely will take on the role.
