The trend’s name stems from Australian slang. It has become popular among Gen Z and Alpha users on TikTok, where they inhale these dangerous substances into their bodies, putting their lives at stake for massive views. The consumption of these fumes could temporarily make an individual high. However, it could also have fatal effects on one’s body including choking, seizures, and heart attack. At times, it could also lead to an individual’s death. According to one of the Fox News reports, several young individual deaths were reported from different parts of the world following this trend.
Most recently, Nichola King, a mother shared a distressing story about her 12-year-old son, Cesar who followed this trend. She revealed having heard a moaning sound downstairs and thought that Cesar might have gotten some injury falling. However, when she reached downstairs, she couldn’t believe her eyes. “I started going downstairs and saw Cesar lying on the floor and his eyes were rolling back into his head,” she said. He was immediately rushed to the hospital. Further, he was diagnosed with cardiac arrest and was in a medically induced coma for 48 hours. Thankfully, he survived and was released from the hospital. Following this tragedy, her mother warned other parents and children to be cautious and not carry out this dangerous trend.
Due to the serious nature of the chroming trend, TikTok has implemented stricter content policies. The platform now actively removes any content promoting or engaging in chroming, and users found participating in this trend face having their videos taken down.
