In a recent interview, Joblo asked Wood if he could reprise his role as the LOTR protagonist in the upcoming movie. He gave a positive reply, saying he was more than open to the possibility. I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals within the context of that world would be… Jumping back into a world that’s so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome.”

Could Ian McKellen return as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum?

Yes, Sir Ian McKellen’s return as Gandalf looks very promising. He has himself confirmed that the creators of The Hunt for Gollum have already approached him with the role.

Speaking with Big Issue, the thespian revealed that a script is not complete yet and urged the creators to be quick. “I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him,” says McKellen. “When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick!”

Will Viggo Mortensen return as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum?

There is more good news for the Tolkien fandom. Viggo Mortensen has also expressed his interest in returning as the King of Gondor.

While promoting his recent Western flick, The Dead Don’t Hurt, Mortensen spoke with GQ about the possibility of becoming Aragorn again as long as there is a solid script. When asked if he would consider returning to the franchise, Mortensen replied, “Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually.”

He added, “I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

As the name suggests, The Hunt for Gollum will focus on the titular character immortalized by Andy Serkis. Not only will Serkis reprise this iconic role, but he will also serve as the director. The script is on its way to completion with the help of writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Reports suggest that the movie can arrive sometime in 2026.
