Why did Ashlyn Watkins get arrested?

University of South Carolina police arrested Ashlyn Watkins and charged her with first-degree assault, battery, and kidnapping. This happened after an incident on the campus. According to court records, the incident occurred at a student housing center, where Watkins allegedly grabbed the victim’s face, pulled her arms, and pushed her. She then reportedly picked up the victim and carried her against her will, forcing her to walk down the hallway.

The victim managed to escape and pulled a fire alarm to seek help before receiving treatment for minor injuries. Watkins was released on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 25. Her attorney has asked the public for patience, stating that the full details will reveal a different perspective. In a statement to ESPN, a South Carolina program spokesperson said, “We are aware of the situation and are continuing to gather information.”

According to Newsweek, Watkins is a key player for the South Carolina Gamecocks and contributed to their recent national championship team. The university is aware of the situation and is gathering more information as Watkins’ future with the team remains uncertain. Following the news release, Watkins’ attorney, Todd Rutherford, issued a statement on Saturday night. He requested patience from the public regarding the matter. Rutherford further added, “We believe once everybody has a full grasp of what happened, this will end up being a misunderstanding.” He also emphasized, “What we know for certain is that Ashlyn did not assault anyone. And she did not kidnap anyone.”
