What Happened With JuJu Smith-Schuster? NFL Contract Explained

JuJu Smith-Schuster has been in the headlines lately due to his reported contract agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs. He previously played for the Chiefs in 2022, putting in pivotal performances as his side secured the Super Bowl title. Smith-Schuster ultimately joined forces with the New England Patriots in 2023, bringing his career with the Chiefs to a premature end. Nevertheless, the wide receiver has seemingly signed a contract with his former side prior to the commencement of the new season.

Is JuJu Smith-Schuster joining the Kansas City Chiefs?

According to ESPN, JuJu Smith-Schuster has been recruited by the Chiefs. He was also seen practicing in uniform with the team on Monday.

Having predominantly played for the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout his NFL career, JuJu Smith-Schuster signed a one-year contract with Kansas in 2022. In his only season at the Arrowhead Stadium, the American professional managed to record 78 passes for 933 yards. Following the expiration of his agreement, Smith-Schuster was effectively released from the roster of the Chiefs in 2023.

As one of the most coveted free agents in 2023, JuJu Smith-Schuster was offered a three-year $25 million contract by the Patriots. In an underwhelming campaign, the NFL veteran could only manage 29 passes for 260 yards and a solitary touchdown in 11 games for New England. Consequently, he was let go by his side just one year after his recruitment.

In a surprising turn of events, JuJu Smith-Schuster has now reunited with the Chiefs. The reigning Super Bowl champions had already signed free agent Marquise Brown in Smith-Schuster’s position. Moreover, they also drafted wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the first round to bolster their receiving options. However, Brown ended up dislocating his shoulder during preseason, putting his availability for the upcoming season into question. The Chiefs are believed to have agreed to a contract with JuJu Smith-Schuster as a response to this.
