The announcement of James Spader’s return as Ultron in Marvel’s upcoming Vision series has surprised fans. This is because of the character’s apparent death in Avengers: Age of Ultron. As such, many are wondering how Ultron is returning. Fans also want to know if Ultron will be the main villain of the Vision Quest series, starring Paul Bettany’s White Vision.
So, here’s everything you need to know about Ultron’s return in the Vision series.
How is Ultron coming back in Marvel’s Vision series?
It is currently unknown how Ultron is officially coming back in Marvel’s Vision series.
However, some MCU projects have contained several clues hinting at Ultron’s survival. For instance, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was revealed that Vision had a part of Ultron’s consciousness in him. This was alongside parts of Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and J.A.R.V.I.S’ consciousness.
Later in WandaVision, S.W.O.R.D.’s White Vision, rebuilt from Vision’s deceased remains in Avengers: Infinity War, upon confronting the imaginary Vision in Wanda Maximoff’s Hex-based reality in Westview, had the original Vision’s memories implanted in him by the latter. This subsequently likely brought back part of Ultron’s consciousness in him. This consciousness could eventually manifest itself in the Vision series, paving the way for Ultron’s return.
Moreover, Spider-Man: Homecoming also teased Ultron’s return, which showed Spider-Man holding the head of an Ultron sentry with glowing red eyes. The glowing red eyes indicated that Ultron was somehow still alive but staying dormant until the right time to come out and re-enact his plans for humanity’s extinction.
There is also a possibility that what Ultron fans will see in Vision Quest may not be the original version of the character but rather a variant. This would not be surprising given how the animated What If…? series explored different variants of the character.
Will Ultron Be the Villain of Vision Quest Series?
Ultron could likely be the villain of Vision Quest.
However, it remains to be seen whether Ultron will have a major villainous role or a more supporting role that supplants the actual currently unknown main villain of the show.
Vision Quest is said to be the third part of a trilogy that began with WandaVision and is expected to continue with Agatha All Along. This series is expected to begin filming in early 2025. Terry Matalas, who created Star Trek: Picard, will serve as showrunner (via The Hollywood Reporter).
