After surviving a suicide bombing in New York City, seasoned war photographer Lee Smith and his journalist buddy Joel meet up with their mentor Sammy to discuss their plan to interview the reclusive president. Sammy tries to talk them out of going to the capital but ultimately decides to tag along to visit the frontlines in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The next morning, Lee discovers that Joel has invited a young aspiring photojournalist, Jessie Cullen, who he met during the bombing, to join their mission. Things took a wild turn as the group was leaving the city. They pulled into a gas station guarded by armed guys and had to shell out three hundred Canadian dollars just to fill up. While Jessie wandered over to the nearby car wash, she stumbled upon the guards torturing two guys they accused of looting. One of the guards noticed Jessie, but Lee quickly stepped in, snapping a photo of the guard posing with his captives to ease the tension.
