Why NCIS Fans Think Mark Harmon Could Return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs

With NCIS: Origins set to make its debut soon, fans have raised the question of whether Mark Harmon will return as the fan favorite character Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Gibbs was a pivotal character in the original series until his departure in NCIS season 19. The fandom is now eager to know whether Harmon’s new prequel series will herald a comeback.

Without further adieu, here is all we know about Mark Harmon’s role in NCIS: Origins and whether he will reprise his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Will Mark Harmon reprise his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS?

Sadly, it has not been confirmed by either Harmon or the showrunners if his character will make a comeback in NCIS. Yet, there might still be hope for the return of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Fans are already aware that NCIS: Origins will premiere later this year on October 14. Reports have confirmed that Harmon will be providing his voice for the narration. His involvement in the much-anticipated series teases a possible comeback for Gibbs in the original show.

Speaking with TVLine, Harmon stated that he himself is not aware of any cameo for Gibbs in NCIS. When asked about Gibbs’s departure from the show and his possible comeback, he said, “It wasn’t so much a decision to leave, but the right timing to push away a little bit. I was thrilled with the storyline they came up with and how they handled the character. And the show continued on. I have been asked that a lot…I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do. Directly, like a phone call…? Not that I’m aware of. I don’t know [if I’ll be back for the eventual series finale]. I don’t think he’s still standing in the stream.” (Source: TVLine)

Will Mark Harmon appear in NCIS: Origins?

NCIS: Origins is a prequel series that will follow a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in his rookie years at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office in the 90s. Austin Stowell will play Gibbs, but Mark Harmon will narrate the series as the older version of the character. Whether or not Harmon will make a cameo appearance in the show is not confirmed. Besides providing his voice in the show, Harmon also serves as its co-producer.

At this point, it is difficult to predict whether fans will see Harmon back on screen as Gibbs. Our best bet is to wait until the premiere to see if the showrunners decide to bring him back soon.
