Is Kraven the Hunter Set in MCU or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

As Kraven the Hunter is all set to release in December, several fans might be wondering whether the upcoming movie is set in the MCU, in its own universe, or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Given how there have been multiple Marvel franchises like the MCU, the Amazing Spider-Man Universe, and the Fox X-Men universe running simultaneously over the years, fans’ curiosity and possible confusion are not surprising.

So, in which universe is Kraven the Hunter set? Here’s your answer.

Is Kraven the Hunter MCU Canon?

No, Kraven the Hunter is not MCU canon. It is set in the SSU, or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

The SSU is where Tom Hardy’s Venom movies and Jared Leto’s Morbius are set in. However, Kraven the Hunter is part of the MCU multiverse. This is thanks to the connection that was established in Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In both films, Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Venom were shown arriving in and exiting the MCU thanks to Doctor Strange’s messy memory-wipe spell. Moreover, prior to leaving the MCU, Hardy’s Venom ended up leaving behind a piece of the Venom symbiote.

The MCU-SSU multiversal connection was again explored in a rather illogical manner in the critically panned mid and post-credits scenes of Morbius. Here, Michael Keaton’s Vulture, who is from the MCU and first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, somehow arrived in the SSU via Doctor Strange’s spell. In the scenes, he was shown tracking down Jared Leto’s Morbius in an attempt to form an alliance with him.

Kraven the Hunter’s lead actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson was, however, part of the MCU between 2014 and 2015. He portrayed Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in a cameo role in the mid-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and in a full-fledged supporting role in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Age of Ultron, Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver died during the Avengers’ climatic battle against Ultron at the end of the film.

Kraven the Hunter is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2024.
