Deadpool & Wolverine: Where Is Gambit’s Accent From? Country Origin Explained

Deadpool & Wolverine is still making waves everywhere after its huge success in theaters worldwide. The movie is loaded with cameos, and MCU has been actively showcasing all the actors who popped up unexpectedly in this hit. But one question that’s on a lot of minds is about the accent of Channing Tatum’s Gambit. Where does it come from, and which country does Remy LeBeau, AKA Gambit belong to?

So, here is all you need to know about the Channing Tatum’s Gambit’s unique voice and its origins in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Why Channing Tatum’s Gambit voice sounds so different in Deadpool & Wolverine?

The reason behind Channing Tatum’s Remy Gambit accent sounding so different in Deadpool & Wolverine is because it is a tribute to the character’s hometown, New Orleans.

In the Marvel Comics books, Gambit hails from New Orleans and is of Cajun descent. Hence, he communicates in both Cajun English and Louisiana French. Recognizing this background, Channing Tatum made sure to infuse it inside his portrayal of the character with these linguistic elements. It’s worth noting that Gambit’s accent has a strong Southern tone, even in his portrayal in X-Men ’97, and Tatum definitely kept that in mind.

The actor appearing on-screen as Gambit is one of the main highlights of Deadpool & Wolverine, leaving fans utterly stunned and thrilled. This cameo emerges as one of the most jaw-dropping moments in the film, but the surprises keep coming. Audiences are even more surprised when Tatum begins to speak in character as Gambit, effectively showcasing the authentic Cajun English and Louisiana French accent.

In an interview with Variety, director Shawn Levy shared how he is really happy with Tatum’s performance. Moreover, he is glad that the actor finally got the recognition he’s been waiting for since several years. “I am obsessed with Channing as Gambit in this movie. What went into this, first and foremost, is a decade of Channing wanting to play this part. And a decade of Channing almost playing this part at Fox,” said Levy.

Levy added that not only Tatum did great justice by nailing the visual portrayal, but he even improvised it by bringing the Cajun and French flavor into his speech. In fact, the character’s voice in the film has even turned into a meme online. Evidently, the actor has brought out Gambit’s Southern accent accurately in Deadpool & Wolverine and is receiving much love for it from fans.
