After placing 6th in the womenās 100m butterfly swimming heats, Alonso failed to make it to the semi-finals. Soon, she took to social media to announce her retirement from swimming. The caption of her post read, āItās official now! Iām retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support! Sorry Paraguay ā„ļø I only have to thank you!ā
As per Telemundo, the mission head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, Larissa Schaerer, asked for Alonso to leave the Olympic village immediately, saying she āwas creating an inappropriate environment for the Paraguayan team.ā
However, as reported by the New York Post, Alonso wrote in an Instagram story on Monday, āI just wanted to clarify that they never took me out or expelled me from anywhere, stop spreading false information. I donāt want to give any statement but I am not going to let lies affect me either.ā
