Who Could Be Kamala Harris’ Vice President? VP Potential Candidate Explained

On Sunday, July 21, Joe Biden, the 46th and incumbent President of the United States, withdrew his candidacy from the upcoming 2024 presidential election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee for the Democratic Party. This instantly became major news across the world, with many wondering who will be Harris’ VP pick in the upcoming election.

Here is a list of candidates that can potentially be Harris’ running mate.

List of potential candidates for Kamala Harris’ vice president

Although Harris has received endorsements from Biden, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, the Congressional Black Caucus, and others, she is not yet the official Democratic nominee. If she is indeed selected to take on the Republican nominee Donald Trump in the 2024 election, her VP pick is bound to play a critical role in a race in which Trump has already found his running mate in the U.S. Senator and Marine veteran J. D. Vance.

The below-mentioned politicians are some of the choices that Harris can choose from, to partner her in the 2024 election.

Gavin Newsom

Gavin Newsom, the current Governor of California, can be one of the potential candidates to run as Harris’ VP pick. He is popular among the progressives because of his policies and definitely knows how to be part of successful campaigns.

Pete Buttigieg

Pete Buttigieg, the current Secretary of Transportation, was a mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and ran an unsuccessful campaign for the 2020 presidential election. He is also a great candidate for Harris’ VP, especially with his background in the U.S. Navy.

If the Democrats eventually decide on the Harris-Buttigieg ticket and if they win the race, Kamala Harris will become the first Black woman and the first Asian-American person to assume office, while Buttigieg will become the first openly gay Vice-President in U.S. history.

J. B. Pritzker

J. B. Pritzker, the current Governor of Illinois, is another potential candidate for Harris’ VP. He has been an unrelenting critic of Trump, which can be advantageous for the Democrats during the race.

Josh Shapiro

Josh Shapiro has been the Governor of Pennsylvania since 2023. With Pennsylvania being a major swing state, the votes that Shapiro will likely draw can prove critical to Harris’ election as the U.S. President.

Gretchen Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer is the current Governor of Michigan. If the Democrats pick her as Harris’ running mate, they will field an all-women ticket against Trump and Vance, underscoring their commitment to progressive values.

Wes Moore

Maryland Governor Wes Moore is another great choice for Harris’ VP. Among other qualities, he is an Army veteran and has served in Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks.
