What did Sean Kingston and his mother allegedly do?
Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, allegedly committed a $1 million fraudulent scheme. The scheme involved using fraudulent documents to purchase high-end vehicles, jewelry, and other goods from victim sellers.
According to the press release of the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida, a grand jury in Miami, Florida, charged Sean Kingston and Janice Turner, each with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. This violated Title 18 of the United States Code Section 1349. They were also charged with five counts of wire fraud. This violated Title 18 of the United States Code Section 1343. The defendant, if convicted of these charges, could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
The allegations in the indictment suggest that Kingston and his mother enriched themselves via unjust means. According to The New York Times, this involved false representation of executed bank wire or other monetary payment transfers as payment for vehicles, jewelry, and other goods purchased. Kingston and his mother were also alleged to have retained or attempted to retain the purchased vehicles, jewelry, and goods despite their banks not having executed the wire transfer or any other monetary payment.
Back on May 23, 2024, Kingston’s rented Southwest Ranches mansion in Florida was raided by SWAT. His mother was subsequently arrested. Kingston himself was arrested in Fort Irwin, California, shortly after and booked into a San Bernardino County jail. This was on account of multiple instances of fraud and theft, as per CBS News. Kingston’s arrest happened after Ver Ver Entertainment filed a lawsuit against him in February 2024 for allegedly not paying for items he purchased from them, according to People.
As per Rolling Stone, Kingston subsequently waived his right to fight extradition. One week later, he was released after posting a bail of $100,000 (via TMZ).
