Andre Seldon Jr. passes away at 22, claims report
On July 20, 2024, Utah State University confirmed the tragic death of Andre Seldon Jr., a promising young football player, in a cliff-diving accident. According to CNN Sports, the incident occurred at Porcupine Reservoir, roughly 20 miles from the university campus.
Authorities were alerted around 2:20 p.m. MT when witnesses reported that a man had leaped from the cliffs and failed to emerge from the water. Search and rescue teams initiated a search that lasted several hours. According to USA Today, Seldon’s body was recovered from the reservoir at 9:05 p.m. MT.
Seldon, 22, had recently transferred to Utah State from New Mexico State University, where he had a standout 2023 season, and had also played at the University of Michigan. He was set to start his studies and football career at Utah State this fall. He is survived by his parents, Danielle Smith and Andre Seldon Sr.
Andre Seldon Jr. was a highly-regarded recruit from Belleville High School in Michigan. He initially began his college football journey at the University of Michigan, as reported by The New York Post. During his first two years there, he made appearances in a single game each season. Seldon later transferred to New Mexico State, where he played under defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling for the past two seasons.
According to USA Today, Dreiling said in a statement, “Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own. Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”
