According to his official White House website profile, Doug Emhoff was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Mike and Barbara Emhoff. He has two siblings, Jamie and Andy. Emhoff was raised in Matawan, New Jersey, and eventually moved with his family to Los Angeles during his teenage years. He earned his B.A. degree from California State University, Northridge. He later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law and began practicing law.

As the first Jewish spouse of an American Vice President, Emhoff has proudly shared his culture through Passover celebrations at the White House and other Jewish customs. He has also worked to fight antisemitism with the aid of campus Jewish student leaders and the House Bipartisan Task Force.

Prior to her marriage to Doug Emhoff, Kamala Harris was involved with talk show host Montel Williams and ex-San Francisco mayor Willie Brown.

According to the New York Post, Harris and Brown dated until 1996. Moreover, in a San Francisco Chronicle op-ed piece, he urged Harris to decline the role of Vice President if Joe Biden offered it to her. Furthermore, he instead suggested she should go for the US attorney general position.
