What Happened to Greg Abbott? Accident & Health Explained

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently addressed the crowd at the 2024 Republican National Convention. As a known Donald Trump supporter, the attorney-turned-politician was heard criticizing President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. However, an aspect that has sparked people’s curiosity over time is Abbott’s wheelchair-bound status, making them wonder what actually happened to the Republican Party veteran.

Here are all the available details regarding the incident that restricted Greg Abbott to a wheelchair.

What happened to Greg Abbott?

Governor Greg Abbott suffered from a grave injury when he was young that ultimately left him paralyzed.

As stated on his website, Abbott was 26 years old at the time of the accident that forced him to use a wheelchair. The former Texas attorney general was taking a break from studying for his bar exam when the incident occurred. He had reportedly gone out for a quick run when a large oak tree cracked and fell on his back. The impact crushed his multiple vertebrae, which ended up splintering into his spinal cord. Abbott also suffered from broken ribs and sustained severe damage to his internal organs in the accident.

After a thorough medical assessment, two steel rods were inserted near his spine for additional support. Abbott was also informed that he had been paralyzed from the waist down, explaining his use of a wheelchair. Despite the massive setback, the 66-year-old politician has never let his physical condition hinder his potential. In a 2014 Houston Chronicle interview, Abbott said, “The doctors told me I was never going to walk again, so I focused on how good I could be without walking.”

A staunch believer in the conservative ideology, Abbott has retained his post of Texas governor since 2015. He is currently rallying behind Donald Trump as Trump prepares to go against Joe Biden in the 2024 US Presidential elections.
