Captain America 4: Is Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers Dead? Funeral Scene Explained

Fans are wondering if Steve Rogers is dead in Captain America 4. This curiosity came about after the recently released teaser trailer for Brave New World showed a brief shot of a military funeral.

So, did Steve Rogers’ Captain America die in Brave New World? Whose funeral is shown in the film? Here are your answers.

Is Steve Rogers dead in Captain America 4?

It is unconfirmed if Steve Rogers is dead in Captain America 4. The confusion will be cleared once the film hits theaters.

However, online speculation suggests that the funeral could likely be for Steve Rogers. Rogers was hinted to have passed away during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s events. Sam Wilson subsequently took up Rogers’ Captain America mantle at the end of the series. Thus, perhaps, this funeral is likely to close out Rogers’ time as Captain America and mark Sam Wilson’s taking up of the mantle in front of the rest of the world (via Dexerto).

Many fans have known for a while that a funeral would take place during the events of the movie. In March 2023, several set photos depicting the film’s characters like Sam Wilson and Betty Ross wearing funeral garb leaked online (via JustJared).

Who could the funeral be for in Captain America: Brave New World?

It is currently unknown whose funeral is shown in Captain America: Brave New World.

However, according to Dexerto, one possible candidate for whom the funeral could be for is President Thunderbolt Ross. The trailer seems to make this theory possible by connecting the funeral shot and Red Hulk’s reveal at the end via cherry blossom trees as they make background appearances in both shots.

It is possible that Ross may have faked his death via his heavily rumored Red Hulk transformation in the film to go about exercising his unrevealed motivations in the movie. Moreover, Betty Ross’ appearance in the funeral revealed by JustJared’s photos also appears to support the theory.

This would not be surprising considering how Ross fakes his death in the comics via his Red Hulk transformation and “Life-Model Decoy” use. In the comics, as Red Hulk, Ross hides from the public eye to go about removing gamma-powered threats including Hulk from earth.

Captain America: Brave New World arrives in theaters on February 14, 2025.
