The upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic Polly Pocket toy line has generated significant online buzz since its announcement by Mattel Films in 2022. Lily Collins was slated to star, with Lena Dunham attached to direct and write the screenplay. However, there has been speculation that Lena Dunham might not be directing the Polly Pocket movie.
So, here is everything you need to know about why is Lena Dunham not directing Mattel’s Polly Pocket movie.
Why is Lena Dunham not directing Mattel’s Polly Pocket movie?
Lena Dunham is not directing Mattel’s Polly Pocket because she thinks she won’t be able to recreate Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
In an interview with The New Yorker, Dunham confirmed her departure from the project. She stated, “I think Greta [Gerwig] managed this incredible feat [with Barbie], which was to make this thing that was literally candy to so many different kinds of people and was perfectly and divinely Greta.”
She further noted, “And I just—I felt like, unless I can do it that way, I’m not going to do it. I don’t think I have that in me. I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make Polly Pocket.”
As per Teen Vogue, the Polly Pocket movie’s plot will follow the adventures of a young girl and a pocket-sized woman, who form a friendship. It would focus more on the pocket-sized woman who deals with various challenges in a brutal world.
So far, the only confirmed cast for the Polly Pocket movie is Lily Collins. She will star as the titular doll in the upcoming movie.
