Rubin died of a heart attack on May 10, 2024. He appeared on TV the day before. His co-workers claimed that he did not show any outward sign of discomfort at the time. However, he took a leave from work the following day as he was unwell. After he began to experience stomach pain, Rubin called the emergency services and went to a hospital. KTLA 5 subsequently put out a statement on its official account on X (formerly known as Twitter) announcing the anchor’s death. “KTLA 5 is profoundly saddened to report the death of Sam Rubin. Sam was a giant in the local news industry and the entertainment world, and a fixture of Los Angeles morning television for decades. His laugh, charm, and caring personality touched all who knew him. Sam was a loving husband and father: the roles he cherished the most. Our thoughts are with Sam’s family during this difficult time.”

In July 2024, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner announced that Rubin’s death was “natural” and caused by “ischemic heart disease due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.”

Rubin was married to Leslie Gale Shuman and, before that, to Julie Anderson and shared two children with each of them.
