American cornerback Cameron Sutton is currently dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The Pittsburgh Steelers veteran was recently handed an eight-game suspension notice by his side owing to his ongoing legal battles. But what was Sutton’s fault that also led to his arrest earlier this year?
Here are all the available details regarding the controversy currently surrounding the NFL athlete.
Why was Cameron Sutton suspended?
Sutton has been suspended for eight games by the Pittsburgh Steelers due to his domestic violence arrest, as per the New York Post.
The 29-year-old sportsman was accused of battering a woman in March 2024, which eventually led to his arrest. Consequently, his former team, the Detroit Lions, decided to sever all ties with the cornerback and immediately ousted him from their roster. Despite being just one year into a $33 million three-year contract with the Lions, Sutton was relieved from his duties due to the said allegations.
He was eventually picked up by his former side, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sutton was offered a one-year, $1.2 million contract but ended up getting suspended ahead of the 2024 NFL season. As per ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, the football veteran has decided not to appeal against his temporary banishment.
Why did Cameron Sutton get arrested?
An arrest warrant was issued in Cameron Sutton’s name on March 7, 2024, due to his alleged involvement in domestic abuse.
The entire NFL fraternity was shaken when it was reported that Sutton had assaulted a woman in Lutz, Florida. He was subsequently booked on domestic violence charges on March 20 in Hillsborough County. Despite the active warrant, Sutton allegedly tried to avoid the authorities for a period of two weeks.
Nevertheless, he eventually turned himself in on March 30. The seasoned cornerback then admitted himself into a pretrial diversion program, which included a mental health evaluation for him. As part of the procedure, Sutton also had to renounce any weapons he had in his possession.
In consideration of his recently-imposed ban, the Steelers star is expected to return to the field in Week 10.
